WE only ever had one club. Or did we? As the history of music, Manchester and clubbing is dissected and re-evaluated, for many who didn't visit the city or catch the true underbelly of Manchester at the time, The Hacienda is portrayed, and generally accepted, as the be all and end all of our night time attractions.
Those who experienced the 'second summer of love' and its extensive fallout first hand however, will tell you a different tale. One of those people is Manchester DJ and author Dave Haslam.
"At the time we started Yellow all the clubs in Manchester were playing house," Dave recounts. "House music had almost blown every other style of music out of the city centre ' there was nobody playing rare groove, classic disco and funk at all."
"I was already doing a house night at The Boardwalk on Saturdays, so when the Friday night slot came up and I was approached to take it on, I thought I'd try something different," he says, explaining the thought processes that went into developing one of Manchester's best-loved, and most fun, club nights ever.
"Quite simply though, I realised that the people who wanted to go out and dance to music like Shannon 'Let The Music Play' and Chaka Khan 'I Feel For You' on a Friday night were the kind of people I wanted to hang out with."
