ONE of the city's most hard-working club promoters has got to be the Stylus gang.
Originally strictly promoting the house sound of Chicago in Manchester - which, let's face it, is a pretty niche sound in 2005 - they've put on a string of parties over the last couple of years that have won, lost, been packed, been quiet but all the time they've stuck to their guns in the belief that what they were doing is a good thing.
Now they've opened their sound out and the results have been inspirational.
Tonight with the advent of their second birthday, Stylus proves to all the naysayers that they've been right to stick to their metaphorical weapons as they join up with legendary Mancunian club Robodisco for one heck of a bash.
"We've always been big fans of Robodisco," says promoter and resident DJ Les Croasdaile. "And I've wanted to get Elliot Eastwick and Jason Boardman on at the club for a while now. It's looking like the whole thing should be a great success, fingers crossed."
Robodisco's reputation in Manchester is one of near legend starting at Paradise Factory before moving onto South, then the now long gone Planet K.
Luminaries
In their time they put on such luminaries of the house scene as Derrick Carter, Angel Moraes, Andrew Weatherall, Josh Wink and Harvey. But it was a club that essentially was about the residents.
As time moved on their sound evolved until, finally, by the time the club night closed Elliot, Miles Hollway and Ben Davis were dropping all sorts of numbers to acrowd in search of eclectic music with a house attitude. Fast forward to tonight and the fun continues.
"Elliot's promised he's going to play a real selection of funk, disco, house, even a little rock music," says Les. "Meanwhile Greg Wilson is taking over the back room."
Greg Wilson has been covered quite extensively on these pages as a real godfather of the north west electro edit sound.
His new compilation Credit To The Edit has just been released which should further attract a new crowd down to the Stylus way of thinking.
"It's a great combination," says Les, looking over the flyer for the night. "We've had our ups and downs, sure, but when we come down to The Music Box tonight I think we'll realise it's been worth every minute."
Stylus and Robodisco celebrate Stylus Second birthday at The Music Box, Oxford St tonight.
